| Sankaty Head Light, near Siasconset, Nantucket,
Massachusetts Sankaty Light first went into operation on February 1, 1850. This brick and granite structure with its second-order Fresnel lens from Paris was the first lighthouse in the United States to have a Fresnel lens as part of its original equipment. It was so bright that when some fishermen first saw it they nicknamed it "Blazing Star." I could really sense the pride the local residents and business owners had in their heritage. Everything was so clean and well preserved. It was a memorable moment indeed when we spotted Sankaty Light in the distance. Our first thought was how can we get closer. Finally, we were able to park and walk right up to the lighthouse. |
