| Hovenweep Castle, Hovenweep National Monument,
Arizona The trip to Hovenweep National Monument is a fantastic journey into the past to a time when the region was a farming community, inhabited by an ancient civilization. Amazing are structures that are still standing after 700 years. Evident is their careful attention to detail and their skillful construction that you rarely find even at Mesa Verde. The name Hovenweep means “deserted valley” in the Ute/Piute languages. This is a fitting name for an area that contains not only abandoned ruins such as Hovenweep Castle but also barren mesas and deserted canyons. I was amazed that something this wonderful was out in the middle of nowhere and that I had the opportunity to see it! |
