Crystal Mill

Crystal Mill, Crystal River, Colorado

At one time there was a vertical water wheel that powered a mechanical air compressor. This wheel turned a vertical shaft that ran up through the housing now held together by cables. It operated the air drill for at least two local mines on the hill above the mill.

There are broken boards littering the river bank adjacent to the mill. They are from the stamp mill used to reduce and process the silver ore. The stamp mill may also have been directly powered by the water wheel as the two buildings were virtually connected. It is strictly a four-wheel drive trip from Marble to the mill but well worth the effort.
